To me, movement three is the soul of KAN. Pretty much a full album in itself, Tocando las Estrellas takes the listener on the most dynamic ride of any movement, as it fully elaborates on the harmonic, melodic and rhythmic themes of KAN. Tocar in Spanish means both “to touch” and also “to play” an instrument, so “Tocando las Estrellas” translates to touching or playing the stars, which is the feeling that I had when playing these KAN themes on 12 string guitar and charango. I did my best to allow this movement to write itself, hang on for the ride and be diligent to see it through to completion. After a certain point, the music started to take twists and turns that I had not originally imagined. I wondered if I should try to contain it more, but ultimately decided that my first priority as an artist is to follow the flow of inspiration wherever it leads, without judgment. The result is music which contains so many aspects of my life’s musical journey so far, and truly defies genre. There were moments when I was deep in the twists and turns of this piece where I felt unsure if I would be able to bring it together in a cohesive way, but I was determined to stick with it, so its resolution felt like a resounding triumph for the project and in my life!
